The Color Purple-Alice Walker
Celie is not aloud to go and see Shug sing. When Mr._ comes home, he is very depressed and does not talk much. When Mr._ finds out that Shug is very sick and no one will take her in, he goes out and brings her home. Celie and Shug get to be close friends, and Celie does not want her to leave because when Shug is not there, Mr._ beats her. Shug decides to stay longer till she finds out if Mr._ will beat her anymore. Harpo, one of Mr.___’s sons, gets married and has a good life, but when his wife stands up for herself, he does not know what to do. Celie and Mr._ tell him to beat her. So he tries, but she is too strong. Harpo tries to become bigger and stronger, but in the end his wife leaves him. Shug finds a job in town, and is now staying. Some new characters are Har
po’s new wife, and his old wife’s new husband. His old wife, Sofia, is put in jail for hitting the mayor. His new wife, Squeaky, tries do get her released, but it doesn’t work. Sofia ends up having to be the maid for the mayor’s wife. The language of this novel is hard to understand, because the characters in this book don’t know proper English. They use a lot of slang, and it is very difficult. This novel is aimed towards an older age group, because it is difficult to understand, and there are some “not good” parts in it.

I selected this novel because my mom told me it was a good book. And I had heard of it before, but never read it. There was no key background information that I needed to know before I started reading this novel. A fourteen year old girl, Celie, is telling the story. As the story begins she is talking to God. She is confused about all the things happening in her life. She lives with her mom, dad, sisters, and brothers. Her mom is very sick and is dying. The girl gets raped by her father, and is now pregnant. When she finally had the baby, her father took it and sold it. She then has a second child, a boy, and he sold that one also. Her father treats her very poorly. The setting is in the past, in a country town in Georgia. The first initial problem for Celie is that she has to take care of her brothers and sisters, because her mother has passed away. But another major problem for her is that her father doesn’t want her, and has her get married to Mr.. Now that she is married do Mr._, she takes care of his house, the kids, she cooks, and cleans, and does laundry. He doesn’t pay much attention to her; he is still looking for a woman named Shug Avery. Mr._’s sisters come in to town, and Kate (his one sister) took Celie out to go get some new clothes. Then she tried to get one of the boys to help Celie with the water, but Mr._ told her no, and made her leave. Now Shug Avery is coming to town to sing, and Mr._ gets excited, and gets all dressed up to go see her.
